In 1837, Thierry Hermès first established a harness workshop in Paris and quickly rose to prominence within the carriage trade. Hermès's son, Charles-Émile, took over management from his father in 1880 and moved the shop to 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where it remains to this day. With the help of his son Émile-Maurice, Charles-Émile introduced saddlery and started selling his products retail.
It was Émile-Maurice who would would eventually expand the retail line into accessories and clothing and in 1922 design the first Hermès® handbag for his wife. However, it wasn’t until the 1930s that Hermès® would introduce some of its most recognized original goods such as the leather "Sac à dépêches" in 1935 (better known now as The Kelly) and the Hermès® carrés (square scarves) in 1937. Émile-Maurice summarized the Hermès® philosophy during his leadership as "leather, sport, and a tradition of refined elegance."
From the Kelly (renamed for Grace Kelly of Monaco who made the bag famous when she was photographed in 1956 holding the bag over her stomach to conceal early signs of her pregnancy), to the Constance handbag and accessories line showcasing the emblematic “H”, and of course the now iconic silk scarf, we have a bit of everything in our collection.
